ZEUS, (zoos) King of the Olympians, sits upon his throne high atop the golden palaces of Mount Olympus. The king of the sky and thunder holds aloft his blazing lightning bolt, which was crafted by the Cyclopes. Above, float his winged enforcers, Nike (victory), Bia (force) Zelos (rivalry) and Kratos (strength). Zeus is the Lord of prophecy, relaying them to his radiant son, Apollo, who relates them to the Pythia; the oracle priestess at the temple of Apollo at Delphi. 

Most of us are accustomed to seeing Zeus portrayed as an older man, with white hair and white beard. But in fact, to the ancient Greeks, Zeus was portrayed as middle-aged, with black hair and beard. Remember that Zeus was last born to the titaness Rhea, (before his siblings were swallowed by his father, Cronus) technically making Zeus the youngest of the Olympians. 

The Oracle at Dodona, in northwestern Greece, was a temple site dedicated to Zeus. Here the priests and priestesses used a form of divination involving the rustling sounds of the oak tree and its leaves to gain prophecies. 

Zeus is also known for his insatiable lust; transforming into animals like an eagle, swan, or bull (and even a shower of gold!) to pursue his conquests of female mortals and deities alike.

Major Myths Of Importance

Birth & The Titanomachy: Prior to Zeus’s birth, Kronos (his father) had received a prophecy that he would be overthrown by his children. To avoid this, he began swallowing whole every child of his. Rhea (Zeus’s mother and Kronos’s wife), in fear of her husband, could only watch. Eventually, with the guidance of her mother Gaia, she hatched a plan to end Kronos’s reign. When Zeus was born, instead of presenting him to Kronos as she had done with her children in the past, she presented to him a rock, which Kronos swallowed. She had given birth to Zeus secretly at Crete, where he was given to the Curetes to be raised. The nymph Melissa and the goat Amalthea specifically played a crucial role in his upbringing. When Zeus came of age, he became the cupbearer of Kronos, who did not know his true identity. With a concoction made by Metis (who would later be his first wife), Kronos regurgitating his swallowed children in the reverse order they were eaten (ie Hestia was swallowed first and regurgitated last, hence where the phrase “Hestia first and last”). Zeus convinced his siblings to rise up against Kronos, and the Titanomachy began. Under Gaia’s guidance, he released the cyclopses and the hecatonchires (hundred-handed giants), who aided him against the titans. After ten years, the Olympian gods overthrew the titans, and established their pantheon on Mt. Olympus. Zeus divided the “universe” between him, and his brothers Poseidon and Hades. The titans were imprisoned in Tartarus, with the exception of those who had aided the gods. Zeus became the king of gods, mortals, and the skies, Poseidon became king of the ocean, and Hades became king of the dead.

The Gigantomachy: In vengeance for her children (the titans) being locked away in Tartarus, Gaia bore the giants, who began immediately hurling rocks and burning oak at the sky. There was a prophecy which stated that the giants would not be killed by the gods alone, and upon hearing this, Gaia sought to harvest a plant which could protect her children (pharmakon). Knowing this, Zeus forbade Eos (the dawn), Helios (the sun), and Selene (the moon) from shining, and harvested all the plant himself. Afterwards, he had Athena summon Heracles, who would be the mortal that would aid them in the battle. Apollodorus goes through each of the giants fates and how they were all taken down, but it is suffice to say that they were defeated (aka I do not want to go through every single giant’s death).

The Seven “Wives”: According to Hesiodic myth, Zeus had seven lovers prior to his marriage to Hera. Metis was the first wife, who was the wisest among gods and men. But, after a prophecy from Gaia and Ouranos which stated that after birthing a daughter, Metis would birth a son that would overthrow Zeus, Zeus decided to swallow the pregnant Metis. As a result, Athena would be born out of Zeus’s head later, and Metis would act as Zeus’s internal monologue and guidance. Zeus then married Themis, who gave birth to the Horae and the Moirai. Aside from Hera, Metis and Themis are the only lovers in this list Zeus is explicitly said to have married. The next lovers are as follows (you can see their respective children in the “basic info” section); Eurynome, Demeter, Mnemosyne and Leto. Finally, he married his final wife (but not his last lover) Hera. To woo her, he turned into a Cuckoo, which is why the cuckoo is featured on her scepter.

Worship and Epithets

Notable Fun Facts

He only “fears”¹³ one deity, which is Nyx¹⁴. In Orphic mythology, she delivers Zeus prophecies from the Adyton (a restricted cellar in a Greco-Roman temple).¹⁵

Despite being known for his various affairs and children, he does not place number one as the deity with the most kids (that would be Poseidon).

The Ancient Greeks believed the belly was wear the brain was, and therefore that when Zeus swallowed Metis, he gained her knowledge.

Zeus and Hera’e child Hebe acted as his (and the rest of the gods’s) cubearer until Zeus took Ganymede. It is debated whether or not Ganymede only acted as Zeus’s personal cupbearer or replaced Hebe in that aspect altogether.

1: Zeus's domain varies from place to place, often times the only thing that connected one version of Zeus to a different version of him from another city-state was his name. For example, some local cults venerated him as a Chthonic earth god, rather than the opposite, popularized, Olympian sky god.

2: It is disputed whether or not Anu could be considered the Mesopotamian equivalent of Zeus. Anu is also considered to be the equivalent of Ouranus.

3: Also spelled as “Aegis”. It is an animal skin or shield typically featuring the head of a Gorgon. It is also wielded by Athena, and in the Iliad by Apollo. It may also have been connected to the deity Aex, who nursed Zeus in some myths.

4: Worn in both Ancient Greece and Rome, a chiton is a unisex garment that is fashioned at the shoulders and is made of either wool (Doric) or later linen (Ionic).

5: Zeus and Gaia’s intercourse was accidental. The myth of their union is more closely related to Phrygian mythology. For my sanity’s sake, this will be the only myth that did not originate from Hellas.

6: While certain sources say Zeus fathered Hephaistos, other sources name Hera as the only parent, making him a parthenogenous child.

7: While Homer calls Dione the mother of Aphrodite, other myths say she arose out of the sea foam fully formed after Ouranos's castrated gentile was thrown into the ocean. This lead to Plato making a distinction between Aphrodite Pandemos (Common to all people, child of Dione, and goddess of earthly/sensual pleasures) and Aphrodite Ouranos (Heavenly, born from Ouranos’s castrated gentiles, and goddess of love that transcends the body/physical desires).

8: It is debated whether or not it was Zeus or Hades that fathered Melinoë and Zagreus by Persephone (although in Orphic tradition Zeus fathered Dionysus and the Erinyes by Persephone), as some myths say that Hades is unable to produce life as he is the god of the dead (despite this, some myths said that he fathered Macaria, while no mother is mentioned).

9: Although it is widely recognized that Helen is the daughter of Leda by Zeus, the lost epic called the Cypria says that Helen is the daughter of Nemesis and Zeus.

10: Agdistis was a Hermaphroditic god, but the other gods feared a two-sexed deity, so they castrated him and he became the goddess Kybele.

11: The Palikoi are twin Sicilian deities of hot springs and geysers, that also presided over the solemn oaths sworn upon their springs and provided refuge to escaped slaves in their sanctuary, this is important to note how the Ancient Greeks incorporated other pantheons into their mythology. Okay, I lied, THIS ONE will be the last non-Hellas originated myth, unless I accidentally include more.

12: This also occurs as a poetic epithet, such as in Homer’s Iliad.

13: Although the word used to describe Zeus’s reaction to seeing Nyx isn’t translatable, “fear”, or perhaps “awe-struck in respect”, is an acceptable translation given the scenario.

Fun little thing I learned considering I'm in the God of War fandom and a Greek mythology enthusiast (though I'm unsure if it's true):

Kratos did actually exist in greek mythology, but instead of being the son of Zeus he was the son of the Titans Pallas and Styx and the literal personification of strength with the word 'Kratos', or 'Cratus', meaning 'strength' or 'power'.

He had three siblings, all of which were personifications of specific traits:

Nike, the personification of victory

Bia, the personification of force

Zelos, the personification of rivalry, emulation, jealousy, envy and zeal (And Glory too but I'm not 100% sure about that)

In Aeschylus' 'Prometheus Bound' it even shows how Kratos and his sister Bia drag Prometheus, the Titan that stole fire from the Olympian gods for humanity, to the rocks he was chained to in regular Greek mythology as punishment, his punishment being that an eagle would devour his liver, only for it to grow back again each time since he was immortal, but that's just a fun little thing I wanted to share. :^

Once again, I'm unsure if all of this is 100% true, I researched it a lot before writing this but I guess that could also be the distrust in myself talking. If any of this is wrong, please correct me! ^^

Collette was clumsy. It was something Sheena had known for a while now, had known ever since the first time they’d met, but still the extent surprised her sometimes. Everywhere they visited, there was at least one Collette-shaped imprint. Celestia was no exception.

The snowdrift in front of her had seen better days. Still, there was something terribly endearing about the usual spread-eagle impression Collette had left in it. The better memories of their world-saving journey had always involved this shape.

Sheena crouched in front of it, peering into the darkness. “Collette?” she called out, rubbing her hands as she waited for her girlfriend’s reply.

“H-here!” Collette squeaked as she poked her head out the other side of the snow pile. Snow covered her blonde hair and with her fluffy winter coat, she looked part polar bear.

She was cute.

Sheena jerked her head away before she could stare for too long. Clearing her throat, she asked, “How did you end up all the way over there?”

“L-luck?” Collette laughed sheepishly, a semi-proud smile on her face as she tried to wiggle her way out. “I can’t believe,” she struggled harder, “I did it again.” After one last, furious shake, she flopped limply. “Sorry, could you help?”

“What were you so proud of?” Sheena laughed despite herself, standing up. Slowly, she picked her way to Collette; her skates were awkward and unwieldy on land. Still, she hadn’t been a ninja for nothing. Holding Collette’s hands firmly, she yanked her forward.

“Woah!” Collette shrieked as she tumbled out of the snow and onto Sheena.

They fell backwards. The snow wasn’t nearly as soft as it looked, and Sheena winced as her back hit the hard ground. Collette’s head bumped into her jaw like a battering ram. She was going to definitely feel this tomorrow. Winded, she groaned. “Ouch.”

“Are you okay?” Collette lifted her head, eyes wide with worry. Her long hair tickled Sheena’s neck. She was close. Far too close. Any closer and they could kiss.

Sheena flushed at the thought. Her skin burned as she tried to look anywhere else. If she could have, she’d run, but Collette’s body pinned her in place. “Y-yeah.”

“You sure?” Collette asked, leaning a little closer.

Was she doing this on purpose? Sheena wondered briefly just what lessons Zelos had been giving her on the side. He’d claimed it was to help her improve her magic, but was it really? After they went home, she was going to pay her old friend a visit. For now, though, she had to survive this situation. Or maybe this entire vacation, if things kept up like this.

Collette looked like she was about to lean forward. Sheena quickly stuttered, “P-perfectly fine! You?”

Collette narrowed her eyes, studying her, before beaming and nodding. “Yep. Thanks.”

After a second, Collette finally rolled off. Somehow, that didn’t make it any easier to breathe. Sheena inhaled deeply, recalling every calming exercise she’d learned. After everything they’d been through, she’d expected to get used to it, but somehow Collette threw her for a loop every time they talked.

Hell, they’d been travelling across the world on a vacation of sorts, just the two of them, and still Sheena didn’t know how to react every time Collette grabbed her hand. She could almost hear Zelos’ laughter. Yeah, definitely visiting the bastard after this.

“I can’t get up,” Collette admitted.

Sheena glanced beside her to find her girlfriend rocking like a turtle, trying and failing to turn over. Collette had never been athletic, even less so now that she was bundled up until she resembled a meat bun. Holding back a snicker, Sheena smoothly jumped to her feet and held out a hand. “Here, hold on.”

Collette beamed, grabbing her immediately. “Thanks!”

It took little effort to yank her up. Sheena had been convinced for months now that it had something to do with her angelic blood, that perhaps her bones were as hollow as a bird’s. The momentum was more than she expected. They bumped their foreheads before Sheena took a step back, stabilizing them.

“Ouch.” Sheena winced as she rubbed her head. Despite how fragile Collette looked, her skull was as hard as a rock. Maybe it was self defense after her many, many accidents; her body had toughened up in order to survive. “You okay?”

“Yep!” Collette chirped as she bounced, as though she had forgotten just how they’d ended up in this mess. “All in one piece!”

“That’s not…” What I meant. Even now, Collette had to be pushed to be a little selfish, to tell others when she was hurt. Sheena eyed her for a moment, making sure that she hadn’t twisted her ankle or injured herself. Judging by the way she was jumping, she didn’t even have a limp. “Well…that’s good.”

“Alright. Let’s try again!” Without waiting for a reply, Collette made her way back to the ice.

“Are you sure you want to do this again?” Sheena asked softly, trailing after her. They’d been on the ice for an hour now; when Collette had said she was a slow learner, she hadn’t been kidding. By now, the cold was starting to set in and Sheena’s fingers and toes were numb.

“Of course!” Collette held out a hand, her expression determined. “I can do it this time.”

“It’s cold,” Sheena warned fruitlessly. Out of all the places they visited, she hated the cold ones the most. The chill had a way of seeping into her bones and staying there, refusing to leave even after a hot shower.

“Oh.” Collette frowned before tugging on her scarf. “Here—”

“No, no, I didn’t mean it like that,” Sheena interrupted immediately. She firmly pushed the scarf back down, tying it tight. Last thing she needed was for Collette to catch a cold herself. “I’m more worried about you.”

Collette’s hands were still curled over the woolen fabric. “You sure? I’m warm.”

Sheena nodded furiously. “I’m wearing long sleeves today.”

“Oh! I was wondering why.” Collette giggled before reaching down and taking her hand. “So you were cold! Last time we came here, you kept wearing that tiny dress. Lloyd and I wondered how you did it.”

In all honesty, they’d gone through this conversation several times already, the ‘last try’ getting pushed back with each attempt. It was hard to mind though, as their fingers intertwined, as Collette bit her lip earnestly as she stared at her feet, as they slowly made their way across the ice.

“One, two,” Sheena softly chanted. “One, two.”

Collette leaned forward, rubbing their noses, and Sheena giggled. The cold was setting in but it was hard to feel anything but warm when Collette smiled at her.

Vegan/Vegan Friendly Restaurants in The San Gabriel Valley

https://www.yelp.com/biz/el-dorado-pollos-a-la-brasa-pasadena Peruvian restaurant. The only thing I get here is the Tofu Saltado, it's pretty good. They have two different styles, with spaghetti noodles or rice, I much prefer the rice option. I always ask for it with easy oil and sauce, otherwise there's a ridiculous amount, maybe enough to fill a 4 oz cup, seriously.

The food can be hit or miss but the owner is a cool old hippie and does a lot for the community and gives meals to those who can't afford it. There's a different menu daily of about 6 things, some of the things are offered daily though, you can do mini portions of each as a combo plate. $10 will get you pretty far in the cafe. Most of the ingredients he uses are organic and locally sourced. He also sells produce and has bulk bins with pretty much everything. I'll be legit sad if this place doesn't survive the pandemic.

It's located in a commissary with a bunch of other restaurants. There's two vegan businesses there but it's all impossible/beyond stuff so I never bothered.

My Vegan - Really the only things I get here is the Oh My Potato dish and the lentil tacos. I've tried most of the menu over the years and a lot of it is just okay. They have a second location in Eagle Rock with a smaller menu.

The only thing I get here is the tempeh bacon sandwich but it's probably my favorite sandwich anywhere. I've tried a few times to make tempeh bacon but could never get it like theirs. They also use bread on it that they bake there. They are only open for lunch unfortunately.

Sage and Real Food Daily are both in Pasadena and a lot of people like them but I feel they're too expensive for what you get so I don't really endorse either

I like this spot, they have a few different vegan options to put in tacos/burritos/etc. I usually get a burrito filled with mushrooms, spinach, and tofu. They also carry some kind of packaged vegan flan but it's flavored and just okay. 

I use the Happy Cow app whenever I'm in a city I'm not too familiar with and it shows me which veg or veg friendly restaurants are nearby

Favorite Season: Florida only has one season, I’ve forgotten what the rest are. (Theoretically, spring, because I like new growth and flowers and the theme of renewal. Soft rain showers and fresh sprouting buds.)

Favorite Book: I love every book on my bookshelf enough that I bought it, so that counts for something? Some favorites include “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan,” “The Time Traveler's Wife,” “Dreaming in English,” and “Warbreaker.”

Favorite Flower: I dunno, I love a lot of flowers. Tiger lilies, daisies, forget-me-nots...I love little flowers that can be put into your hair as tiny accents too.

Coffee, tea, or hot cocoa: Depends on the day and my mood. I don’t really drink coffee, but I like coffee flavored things (and I drink cappuccino). I prefer green tea and chai over other teas (I had a fantastic plum and cinnamon green tea in England). Hot cocoa is great on cold nights, but those are less frequent here in Florida, so it’s been a while since I had some...

Cat or dog person: Cats. I love cats. Cats are the best thing ever. (I like to look at dogs, and dogs often seem to love me, to my annoyance, because I just want to admire them from a distance.)
